Stone carving is a bit of meditation and listening not only to the noise of the hammer and chisel but also to the material. To the stone. It is all about the light and structure. It allows to understand type more – from the different perspective. It is always a subtle play with light and shadow.
We feature here two examples of carving. The example of number “2654″ is carved into a soft limestone which does not forgive any mistakes. This kind of stone requires gentle yet resolute hand and understanding of the material.
The letter “g” was curved into a sandstone full of airy holes and fractures. Therefore the shape of the chosen letter is big and deep so that it is not interrupted by the holes but it integrates naturally with the material.
